Placement Targeting in Google AdWords Editor

Posted on: August 12th, 2008 by Kristie McDonald

In my final post about the new features in Google AdWords Editor, I’d like to review the new Placement targeted campaign options.

Google is really spending some time and energy on improving content network targeting as you may have read in my post about the enhanced campaign feature they enabled a couple of weeks ago.

PPC AdvertisingWe are starting to see some good results with our campaigns that combine the regular keyword targeting content campaign with the ability to designate exactly which sites our ads are placed on.

Now, within AdWords Editor we are able to add site placements at the Ad Group level. I still go to AdWords Online to begin the process of site placement because they will give you a really nice list of sites to choose from based on either keywords or other URLs. However, what I find the AdWords Editor feature useful for is copying a list of site placements into multiple Ad Groups.

It is also very useful if you are entering site placements using a placement report. Run a placement report from a recent keyword targeted content campaign, export it to an XLS file, create a list of sites that are working for your campaign and copy those into the Placements tab. Very streamlined!

Additionally, if you are working with a traditional keyword targeted content campaign, you can now add negative sites at the ad group level.

Once again, anything Google adds to the AdWords Editor that streamlines our process and allows us to get more work done remotely just adds time to our day!

More on Google AdWords Editor Version 6

Posted on: August 5th, 2008 by Kristie McDonald

Last week I wrote about some of the new features in Google AdWords Editor Version 6.

PPC AdvertisingIn addition to the Ad Words performance statistics that I wrote about, they have made some changes to the Editing features available.

Spell Checker
By far, my favorite new editing feature is the spell checker.

This one is a huge timesaver.

We all know that correct spelling is crucial to your ad’s success, but before this change you needed to rely on manual verification.  I would go one step further and download the ad copy into Word to be sure the spelling was 100% error free.

Now this step can be eliminated, still knowing you have error free ad copy.

Drag & Drop
Another useful feature is the ability to drag and drop ad groups within the tree view.

There are many situations when you want to move or copy an ad group between campaigns or into new campaigns.

There are several settings that are available at the campaign level that would lead you to put an ad group in its own campaign.  For example you may want to control the daily budget of a particular ad group separately.  You can also control geo targeting or ad scheduling at the campaign level.  There are other settings as well, but these are the settings I use the most.

As an example, I just had a situation with a client where we noticed their campaigns were maxing out budget on a daily basis.  We were working to manage the ad groups and keywords to maximize their traffic without raising the budget, but there was one Ad Group that converted so well that it didn’t make sense to limit the daily budget in the same way.  We were able to quickly break the Ad Group out into its own campaign with its own daily budget separate from the rest of the groups.

We’ve been able to copy and paste or cut and paste ad groups between campaigns, but this just got even easier with drag and drop.

Google AdWords Editor – New Updates

Posted on: July 29th, 2008 by Kristie McDonald

As Brad mentioned last week, here at JumpFly, we were all very excited with the latest release of Google AdWords Editor.  Those of us that are working on Google Campaigns all day long have realized huge benefits in both productivity and improved analysis ability.  I wanted to expand on some of the high productivity aspects of the recent releases.

PPC AdvertisingWith the release of version 6.0 and now 6.0.1, there were a couple of changes that are already making our lives even easier.  The changes that had the most impact on my productivity were the performance statistics updates.

Performance Statistics

One of the most important aspects in managing accounts is analyzing the performance statistics at many different levels – campaign, ad group and keyword.  And at several different date intervals – daily, weekly, monthly.

We can now download those statistics to a CSV file which makes it very easy to create reports and to analyze the data.

We are also able to refresh the minimum CPC bids which helps when you are managing an account that has keywords that are inactive due to minimum bid requirements.

But my favorite is the fact that when you change the interval (the date range of the stats), Editor now gives you a progress bar.  I know this may seem small to some, but in the past, you would change the date range and could never really be sure when Editor was done downloading the new data.  Now you know how long you will have to wait (do I sit here or go get a cup of coffee?) and when it’s done, they tell you!  Terrific!

Last week we were pleasantly surprised with another change that allows us to download the performance statistics for smaller portions of the account thus saving quite a bit of time if you are only looking to analyze a single campaign or even a single ad group.

Next week, I’ll take a look at the new editing features.
